Armando, born as Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd (Amsterdam, 18 September 1929), is a Dutch painter, sculptor, poet, writer, violinist, actor, journalist, film, television, and theater maker. Armando is his official name; his birth name, the pseudonym as he calls it, no longer exists for him. Later, he had his original name replaced in the civil registry with Armando, a corruption of Herman that he owes to his Italian grandmother. Meanings such as "arming oneself," as literary analysts see in his name, are therefore coincidental. He himself views his work as a "Gesamtkunstwerk," for which his experiences during the Second World War in the vicinity of Camp Amersfoort form the basis. The artist was born in Amsterdam but spent his youth in Amersfoort.
