Product description
Louis XVI Style Architect's Desk, Mahogany, circa 1790 – France A spectacular French architect's desk, a type known as a "desk" or "table à la tronchin" (écrire ou la table à la Tronchin). Made of mahogany and mahogany veneer, with several pieces of embossed green leather as a work surface, in the original Louis XVI style, circa 1790-1800. Operated by a rack and pinion mechanism, it raises and unfolds to form a removable and tiltable writing surface, adjustable by means of brass mechanical supports concealed in the front legs. This allows the user to work standing or sitting. The frieze opens to reveal a drawer with a work surface covered in embossed green leather and divided into compartments, possibly for storing papers. The side features divided compartments, one of which includes a metal inkwell. The sides of the table have removable leaves covered in embossed green leather, matching the rest of the main surface, originally used as candlesticks. It rests on four ornate cylindrical legs that terminate in gilt bronze finials. It comes with a key. The Tronchin table was created in the 18th century during the reign of Louis XVI by the Genevan physician Theodore Tronchin. Tronchin was researching how poor posture among architects working at their desks caused back problems, and he created a table whose surface could be tilted to relieve pressure. The design was very popular at the time. Many renowned carpenters, such as Louis Dufour in Paris, made tables of this type. The design is characterized by its rectangular structure mounted on four legs, with a mechanism that allows the surface to be adjusted, either by a crank or a sliding system. Today, the Tronchin table is a collector's item, valued for both its historical function and its unique and elegant design.
