Antique Tibetan Buddhist Thangka/Vajrabhairava Cloth 1800-1900
This richly colored, hand-painted cloth, also known as a Thangka or Tanka, is a form of religious Buddhist folk art from Tibet. The Tibetan painting depicts the Vajrabhairava. This is the malevolent manifestation of the Manjushri, a deity of whom we also have another work in our collection. The Manjushri is depicted here as a demonic being with 7 heads. However, this is not a personification of evil forces. On the contrary, a wrathful deity is known in Buddhism as the protector of the believers!
Vajrabhairava, or Yamantaka, literally translates to ‘Diamond Terror’. The deity therefore symbolizes the destruction of death. In this painting, the Manjushri celebrates the victory over Yama (the Lord of Death). The Vajrabhairava tells the story of the end of death and selfishness, and with it, the beginning of the cycle of rebirth. Through the beginning of this cycle of rebirth, the path to enlightenment is opened. The greatest good within the Buddhist faith.
A Thangka is a religious Buddhist cloth or banner originating from temples that is carried by monks during ceremonial processions. The image is hand-painted on cotton. The paint used consists of color pigments mixed with yak fat. As a result, the colors of the painting have remained well preserved.
Considering its age, the artwork is still in good condition. However, over the centuries, the work has acquired some imperfections, such as fading of the paint layer and yellowing/rust stains on the bias tape. Because some staples have come loose, the canvas is loosely attached to a chipboard. You can therefore choose for yourself whether to re-staple the canvas to the chipboard, use it as a banner (as was originally the case), or perhaps have it framed.
