We offer this antique Italian terracotta jar, made in the 19th century. An item with a distinctive historical charm. This type of jar was made in the Italian regions where oil was produced (Liguria, Tuscany, or Southern Italy). Since they lack stamped marks, it's difficult to determine their precise region of origin. They were historically used for storing and transporting olive oil.
The jar has a typical ovoid shape, rounded in the center and progressively narrower towards the base and the top. The upper rim features a characteristic glossy yellow-ochre glaze finish. This glaze historically served to prevent liquids from seeping through the porous terracotta and to prevent insects from entering. The main body is made of rough, light beige, almost sandy terracotta. The surface is uneven, but shows visible signs of craftsmanship, irregularities, and small defects typical of handmade objects.
The jar is in good condition and features a distinct patina, with whitish hues and surface discoloration due to outdoor exposure and the natural aging of the material.
This jar, with its historic charm, can now be used as a decorative garden feature, ideal both as a stand-alone decorative sculpture and as a large planter.
