This Japanese low cabinet dates from the Taishō period (1912–1926), a quietly transformative era in Japan, when tradition and openness to the outside world began to coexist more naturally. Domestic interiors evolved during these years, becoming more flexible and attuned to everyday life, reflecting a changing society.
Made from paulownia wood (Paulownia spp.), valued for its lightness and stability, this piece embodies that balance between practicality and calm. Traditionally used to protect precious belongings, paulownia brings a sense of softness and restraint. The cabinet is arranged with two sliding-door compartments and three lower drawers with original metal handles, following a functional logic rooted in simplicity and use.
