Product description
This antique sideboard in solid fir, with two drawers, two doors and a warm dark patina, is a domestic piece from northern China around 1930. Drawer-and-door sideboards belonged to the base furniture of rural Chinese homes, combining quick storage in the upper drawers with main storage — bedding, tableware, tools — behind the lower doors. The slightly generous height made them comfortable to use standing. The frame is built with blind mortise-and-tenon joinery. The two doors swing on dowel pivots and close with wrought-iron ring pulls and discreet matching escutcheons. The two upper drawers also keep their original rings. The top is assembled from three fir boards butt-joined together. The patina shows a deep mahogany tone, the result of time over fir grain. Light wear on edges and ironwork with stable oxidation reinforce the honest reading of the piece, without invasive restoration. It works as a sideboard with character in a living room, dining room or main bedroom. Its warm palette sits naturally in wabi-sabi, japandi or rustic-contemporary interiors, dialoguing well with pale walls and natural materials like linen, ceramic and rattan.
