A stunning and incredibly rare piece of European artisan history. This authentic interwar period (circa 1920s–1930s) standalone smoking valet was hand-sculpted by a master craftsman in Bucharest, Romania. Blending traditional Eastern European woodcarving with the striking, sharp geometric influences of the Art Deco era, this desktop companion serves as a brilliant sculptural conversation piece.
Exquisite Mixed-Media Craftsmanship
Standing at a perfectly proportioned 14 cm, the central column features a meticulously detailed, multi-headed totem of stylized horned bovines (bulls/bison). The level of micro-detailing is exceptional for its size:
* The Eyes: Incredibly intricate, multi-layered inset eyes fashioned from contrasting bone/shell with dark pinpoint pupils.
* The Horns: Hand-shaped using real contrasting organic bovine horn/bone, shifting from a dark base to an aged, warm ivory gradient.
* The Fur: Fine, geometric V-shaped gouge work that catches the light beautifully.
Functionality & Design
Originally designed as a high-end tobacconist desk accessory, the piece features a smooth, deep circular well at the very top (ideal for matches, cigarettes, or modern stationery like fountain pens). The natural curves and gaps behind the animal heads were cleverly designed to cradle and display smoking pipes. The base is beautifully finished with a turned, fluted ruffled edge.
Verified Provenance
The underside retains a highly desirable, fragile vintage paper inventory tag. The text was manually filled out using a mechanical typewriter from the era, reading “București” (Bucharest), alongside fields for order numbers (com.), item numbers (Nr.), and price (Pr.). It also features an original circular state fiscal/luxury tax ink stamp directly on the wood, confirming its status as a registered luxury boutique item from the Kingdom of Romania.
A marvelous, tactile piece of history perfect for a modernist desk, curiosity cabinet, or vintage tobacconiana collection.
