Product description

This antique Japanese box hibachi is a wooden brazier with a copper basin and three drawers. It originates from Japan, from the Taisho period, when the hibachi warmed the home and the water for tea. The box hibachi (hako-hibachi) presided over the Japanese room: it was filled with embers to warm the hands and the teapot. Its box form allowed tobacco and utensils to be kept in the drawers. The body is of strongly figured wood, probably zelkova (keyaki), with a copper basin for the embers and three side drawers with iron pulls. The copper shows oxidation from use; the wood keeps a warm, soft patina. The surface reads authentic, with no restoration to mask it. Today it serves as a decorative box, indoor planter or table piece. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and minimalist interiors, where it brings warmth and material presence.
