Product description
Antique Japanese Tansu merchant’s chest of drawers – Taishō / Showa period (c. ) Ref.: AM27036 Dimensions: Length: 91 cm Depth: 39 cm Height: 108 cm Style: Showa Materials and techniques: Paulownia (Paulownia spp.) Place of origin: Japan Epoch: Late Taishō, early Showa period Date of manufacture: Circa Condition: Good. Wear commensurate with age and use. Original Japanese tansu chest of drawers from the Taishō to early Shōwa period, a time marked by the formal refinement of traditional furniture and a growing aesthetic sobriety, without sacrificing craftsmanship or material quality. The piece is made entirely of paulownia (Paulownia spp.), known in Japan as kiri, a light, stable, and moisture-resistant wood traditionally used for storing textiles, kimonos, and personal belongings due to its excellent preservation properties. Its design presents a clear and balanced composition of four large drawers, reinforced with discreet iron fittings on corners and fronts. Recessed handles and circular metal latches lend the piece a functional and austere character, characteristic of early 20th-century Japanese furniture. The straight grain of the paulownia, together with the warm patina developed over time, gives the cabinet a serene and timeless presence. Its clean, restrained design allows it to integrate naturally into contemporary interiors, as well as wabi-sabi or Japandi spaces. An honest and elegant piece originally conceived for everyday use, now ideal as a chest of drawers, low sideboard, or storage cabinet with strong decorative value. The state of conservation is optimal, except for the characteristic imperfections of any antique produced by the passage of time. Give a point of originality to your home with a unique piece, which merges with the contemporary style bringing personality to your home. This Japanese antique chest can be combined with any of our wooden bowls or with our available antique stools.
