Product description
Antique Japanese tea cabinet (cha tansu) from the late Taisho to early Showa period, made circa 1912–1945 in Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), conceived as a functional domestic piece for storing tea utensils and everyday objects. During this period, Japanese furniture production evolved toward lighter and more accessible forms while maintaining a strong artisanal identity. The cha tansu became a common element in domestic interiors, combining storage, drawers and display areas for tableware and small objects. The structure features sliding glass doors, interior shelving and a lower arrangement of drawers in varying sizes, reflecting a practical organization adapted to daily use. The decorative upper panel introduces a subtle ornamental element, while metal handles maintain a restrained and functional aesthetic. Japanese cedar provides lightness, stability and a warm texture, visible in the straight grain and natural tone of the wood. The surface retains a soft patina with wear marks and tonal variations that speak to its history. Today it works beautifully as a display cabinet, side piece or accent furniture, especially suited to wabi-sabi or contemporary interiors seeking material authenticity.
