Product description
This antique Japanese bamboo baskets set is a storage set of two containers with a fitted lid and sumi-ink calligraphy across the front. It originates from Japan, from the Taishō–Shōwa period, where bamboo was worked by hand and marked with the name of the house or business. The front bears the inscription 今坂 (Imasaka), brushed in black ink, most likely the name of a family or an establishment. Boxes such as this identified the keeping of goods or belongings within the Japanese home and shop. The body is hand-woven in bamboo fibre, braced at edges and corners with strips of stained wood that protect the structure. The interior keeps a green trim and the lid fits firmly over the base. The patina pairs the honey tone of the weave with the darker corner braces, and the calligraphy remains clearly legible despite wear. The surface breathes history with no restoration to mask it. For its character and inscription, it serves as a decorative box with documentary value on a sideboard or a shelf. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi and Japanese-feeling interiors, where it brings authenticity and narrative.
