Antique French Pembroke drop leaf table featuring beautifully figured walnut veneer, two drawers, a pull-out shelf door, and serpentine shaped folding leaves. One available.
Originally designed to maximize space in the home, Pembroke tables became one of the most practical and versatile furniture forms of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This antique example has refined French Provincial forms, a richly figured cathedral flame-grain walnut veneer across the top and serpentine edges. Visible throughout the piece are the marks of traditional cabinetmaking, including hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and hand-finished construction marks.
The table easily extends into a generous surface area by simply raising the hinged side drop leaves, with a wooden cutout to hold the sides up. This clever design makes it ideal for smaller homes. Internal storage comes in the form of two drawers on one end, while the opposite end incorporates a pull-out shelf door. Highly versatile, use it as a side or end table, bedside table, sofa table, hall entryway table, children's table, or display table.
Honest wear to the original veneer and its rich patina tell the story of a piece that has been appreciated and carefully used for generations.

Condition
A small strip of missing wood on the table top was restored with a composite material, as photographed. The rest of the table is original. The walnut veneer and and knobs displays areas of wear, veneer losses, marks, and patina. The table remains structurally stable. The hinged drop leaves raise and lower smoothly, both drawers operate well, and the pull-out slide functions as intended. Traditional hand-cut dovetail joinery and historic cabinetmaker's construction marks are visible.
