This antique console table in pine wood features a long continuous top supported by four splayed legs reinforced with horizontal stretchers. It originates from northern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where pine was worked using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.
The splay-legged console table — a popular variant of Chinese altar furniture — was used in northern China as ritual support in the main room, as a display table or as a long console against the wall. The A-frame structure with horizontal stretchers belongs to the rural vernacular of northern China, with no carvings or drawers, everything resting on structural expression.
The body is built in solid pine. The top is a long board kept full length, with the natural ends visible. The legs splay outward to the floor, reinforced at each end by a pair of horizontal stretchers that stiffen the whole. The perimeter apron is plain and rests beneath the top. The construction is traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon, without metal fasteners.
The patina of the top surface shows a warm brown tone with visible pine grain, softened by decades of use. The legs and stretchers keep a darker tone characteristic of pine exposed to ambient air. The whole has remained complete and preserves its original structural rigidity.
Given its 224 cm length and narrow 45 cm depth, this console table suits long walls in living rooms, entrances and dining rooms. It works as a console behind a sofa or in front of a window, as a display table or as a working surface. It fits wabi-sabi, japandi, contemporary rustic and Asian-inspired interiors.
