This antique console in solid fir, with three drawers and a stepped apron, is a side table from northern China around 1930. It bears no maker’s mark and is described by typology and region.
Drawer consoles were common pieces in China homes: set against a wall, they held small utensils, paperwork or everyday cutlery. The stepped apron beneath the drawers was a recurring decorative device in the region’s coastal domestic furniture.
The frame is built with blind mortise-and-tenon joinery on four square legs. The three aligned drawers keep their circular wrought-iron rings. The top is assembled from butt-joined fir boards; the rear apron sits higher than the front, marking a horizontal rhythm at the base.
The patina shows the characteristic pale tone of fir washed by time, with deep grain and darker zones where hands have polished the wood. Small chips on edges and ironwork with stable oxidation reinforce the honest character of the piece, without invasive restoration.
It works as a hallway console, a light writing desk or a service table in a quiet dining room. Its height and stepped apron sit naturally in wabi-sabi, japandi or rustic-contemporary interiors, adding graphic presence without clutter.
