This antique Chinese papier-mâché basket with applied black papercuts and a handwritten paper lining is a domestic container from northern China around 1930.
Papier-mâché baskets have a long tradition in China, where they served as light containers for seeds, threads or small household goods. The body was then dressed with jianzhi (剪紙) papercuts — a popular folk art of northern China — featuring protective Fu lions and a central floral medallion.
The body is built up from successive layers of glued paper over a mould later removed. The inner lining was made from reused handwritten Chinese sheets, still legible, while the outside received the black papercuts: a tall upper border with foliate festoon, two confronted lions and a central medallion. A final coat of size seals the whole.
The patina shows the natural ageing of paper, with honey tones and small rim losses consistent with age. The papercuts keep their full blackness and cut detail; a small light-paper patch on the base witnesses a period repair. No modern restoration.
It works as a strong decorative object — ideal as a magazine holder, remote-control caddy or a stand-alone display piece on a low sideboard. It sits naturally in wabi-sabi, japandi and rustic-contemporary interiors, bringing graphic ethnographic accent without clutter.
