This 19th-century French standing altar crucifix is a fine example of Napoleon III era devotional art. Crafted from walnut, the piece features a finely carved corpus and a turned wood base, reflecting the traditional craftsmanship of the period. The crucifix measures 31 centimetres in height, making it a suitable scale for a home oratory or private devotional space. The walnut wood displays a rich, warm brown tone, characteristic of the material and its age. The corpus is rendered with attention to anatomical detail, while the cross itself is finished with decorative finials, adding to its formal presence. * The Corpus Christi: A highly detailed carved wood figure of Jesus Christ sculpted in a late Baroque/Rococo style with a striking, expressive physical form. * The Mater Dolorosa: Mounted directly onto the lower shaft of the cross is a secondary carved wood figure of the Virgin Mary in deep mourning at the foot of the cross (Our Lady of Sorrows). * The Titulus: Topped with the traditional, beautifully carved INRI banner plaque. The piece remains in good condition, retaining its original character and patina, with period correct repair visiblein the pictures. The wood shows a natural aging process that enhances its historical authenticity, with the structural integrity of the cross and base remaining sound.There are sparse, historic woodworm flight holes on the stem and crossbar, which are entirely treated, inactive, and serve as excellent proof of its authenticity.
