Product description
An exceptionally rare and highly sculptural antique 18th-century primitive stick-back armchair. Sourced in France, this unique piece of vernacular furniture is a prime example of historical European "Art Populaire" (Folk Art).
Entirely handcrafted by a rural carpenter, the chair features a chunky, hand-hewn solid wood seat plank, elegant bobbin-turned spindle back supports, and a wide, sweeping horseshoe armrest. The underside showcases a heavy-duty layout where the legs are anchored deeply into thick structural wooden reinforcement battens. It features authentic through-tenon joinery, with the hand-wedged ends of the spindles and legs visible on both the top and bottom surfaces.
Important Condition & Usage Note:
Due to its immense age (over 200 years old) and natural historic wood shrinkage, the chair is not strong enough to sit on and should be treated strictly as a decorative object. It is not meant to hold the weight of a person.
It serves as a magnificent, soulful statement piece for a corner display, or a highly unique stand for books, textiles, or potted plants. A beautiful piece of historical sculpture for high-end Wabi-Sabi, rustic, or minimalist interiors.
Condition:
It is structurally intact for display purposes and the wood surfaces boast a rich, deep, untouched patina with honest historic tooling and usage marks. The seat exhibits a stable, natural historic shrinkage separation line typical for centuries-old solid wood.
