The years he spent at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, from 1958 to 1966, are characterized, as are his works, by the teachings of Jean Aujame (1905–1965) and, in particular, Roger Limouse (1894–1989), the oldest of the group of "Painters of Poetic Reality." From this major movement in French painting from the 1930s to the 1960s, which claims the legacy of Fauvism, Castinel retains bright colors and a clear interplay between the backdrop and the main subject of the canvas.
Critics praise the warmth and power of his colors, the abrupt simplicity of his forms, which serve themes dear to him: female muse-men, illusionists, acrobats, and magicians elevated to an imaginary and dreamlike dimension. Maintaining his independence and originality, Castelin draws from a classical repertoire, shaping it with his sensitivity. Each of his characters is inscribed in its own spatiality and expresses a desire to communicate sensations for every reality. Through his masterful compositions and his sometimes powerful, sometimes shallow touch, the viewer enters his intimate universe where love, circus, and magic intertwine according to a precise dramaturgy.
