In Against the Grain, a direct, penetrating gaze takes center stage. The hand touching the face seems to simultaneously protect, examine, and resist. The figure is trapped between touch and distance, between what is visible and what remains hidden.
The cool blue and gray tones and the subtle blue eyes reinforce the subdued, tense atmosphere. The cracked and weathered skin alludes to vulnerability and the traces left behind by experiences. The rough textures and lines in the background run, as it were, against the softness of the portrait, thereby reinforcing the sense of inner resistance.
The work is about searching for stability while something within yourself continues to resist the direction in which you are being pushed.
