Willem de Kooning (Rotterdam, April 24, 1904 – Springs-East Hampton, New York, March 19, 1997) was a Dutch-born painter who lived a large part of his life in the United States. He painted in the style of Abstract Expressionism. Since 1998, the art department of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences in Rotterdam has been called the Willem de Kooning Academy. Before 1998, the institution was known as the Academy of Visual Arts. De Kooning's works are considered part of Abstract Expressionism. He himself disliked the concept of painting style. Other painters in this art movement, who painted at the same time as De Kooning, were Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still.
