The Paper Waves, Is Yellowed and Touched, at the Outer Edge, Not in the Print Itself. The frame has seen better days. Fortunately, these imperfections do not detract from the mystical image you are observing. Look closely at the pictures to be captivated by the refined and graphic, artistic way of rendering this bird of paradise. You can see that you are looking through the eyes of a graphic artist who is rendering Nature in his own unique way. I clearly see Geometric influences and an Art Nouveau and Art Deco inspired style, the Bird of Paradise looks at us sharp and incisive. The Artist Created, In addition to Etchings and This Lithograph, Another Well Known Work, In addition to "The Archer." Also made in 1928 and on display in the Kröller Müller Museum. A Poster for the Holland America Line: "The Newest Production in the World of Shipbuilding: Statendam, 1928" Art Deco, Incidentally, You Will Most Certainly Also See In His Calendar Sheets (from 1925).
What else is known about the Artist: Adrianus (Adriaan) Johannes van 't Hoff (The Hague, December 7, 1893 - Wassenaar, November 15, 1939). He was a Dutch Painter and Graphic Designer, who died due to Illness, at the age of 46. Van 't Hoff had previously studied at the Royal Academy of Art from 1909 to 1915. There he was taught by David Bautz (a Well-known Dutch Etcher, Painter and Teacher) and Frits Jansen (Painter and Deputy Academy Director). Later Van 't Hoff himself worked here as a teacher of hand drawing. He taught Rudie Arens and Piet Bekker.
In 1928 Van 't Hoff participated in the Art Tournament at the Olympic (Summer) Games organized by Amsterdam for the first time. The Art Competitions were part of the Olympic Program for the Fourth time. At these Games the Netherlands achieved good results in the Art Competitions. A Gold Medal in the Olympic Art Tournament for Jan Wils for his Design of the Olympic Stadium in the Architecture Division and also a Gold Medal for Isaac Israëls for his Work "Rider in Red Skirt" in the Art Tournament, but in the Painting Division. Van 't Hoff participated in the Tournament but did not win any prizes. It is a matter of conjecture whether his presence at the tournament and the great Dutch artists around him influenced his artistic work during his short life. When I Look at the Image of "The Archer," I Think of These Games. However, Archery had just dropped out of the Olympics (did not return until 1972). The Archer was made in 1928, the year of the Games. Van 't Hoff stands, in my opinion, as an artist, for an interpretation of powerful imagery and expression. He could not have stood for archery, but he knew how to represent the sport very powerfully in that work. It was an emerging Art Deco era, which Van 't Hoff clearly appealed to. Incidentally, I read that, decades later, the IOC withdrew recognition of the 1928 Art Medals. Fortunately we can still enjoy the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. And the fact is that Van 't Hoff was also there to participate.
Van 't Hoff specialized in painting, etching, drawing and lithography. His etchings were printed by Johan D. Scherft, who exhibited Van 't Hoff's work in his art gallery. In addition, Van 't Hoff was active as an Illustrator of Books and Posters. His work often included Themes such as Fish, Birds and Landscapes, where he got his inspiration mainly from his study travels through Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Van 't Hoff exhibited regularly in The Hague (including Pulchri Studio), Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Zwolle and Arnhem. The Pulchri Studio is a Painting Society founded in 1847 by Young Artists in The Hague. More and more artists settled in The Hague, but were confronted with few possibilities to develop themselves. Van 't Hoff also sold his work through this Pulchri Studio.
What is known, specifically about this work:
With this work you have an almost 100 years old work of art in your house. I am a reseller, the work comes from the owner's family home in The Hague. It first hung in the home of a father of one of these parents, also in The Hague. Van 't Hoff lived in this area and his work was also offered there, as you can read above. It is plausible that it was purchased by this grandfather, there (perhaps in the Pulchri Studio Gallery) in The Hague. Unfortunately this cannot be said with certainty. What is known is that it has never been framed. The work has been damaged, everything is clearly photographed. Of course you are free to restore the work if the defects bother you. In its present condition it will be carefully packed and shipped by me.
