Product description
Figurative rooster-shaped jug. Hand-painted with majolica glazes. Produced by the French factory of "San Clemente." The brand name is inscribed on the bottom of the jug's base: "St Clement" "France." In very good condition, with clean colors, the glaze is intact, and there are no cracks or breaks. Measurements: 34 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. It has a capacity of 1,175 ml.
This jug belongs to a series of figurative absinthe jugs in the shape of a duck and a parrot. Other jugs in this series include those shaped like a pig, rabbit, cat, monkey, and poodle, but these are rarer. If you wish to purchase more pieces, please contact us.
Absinthe, also called "The Green Fairy" or "The Green Devil," is the strongest alcoholic beverage known. It became popular in France thanks to artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who believed it induced artistic inspiration. It was consumed by Oscar Wilde, Manet, Picasso, Degas, Hemingway, and others. It was under the influence of absinthe that Van Gogh cut off his earlobe and gave it to a young prostitute. Its production was banned in 1915.
