Vase Duo from East and West German Ceramic History – East German Pottery Meets West German Pottery
This set unites two exceptional ceramic vases from the 1960s and 1970s, thus connecting two defining movements in European studio ceramics: East German Pottery and West German Pottery. Both vases are considered particularly characteristic models of their respective manufacturers and demonstrate very different, yet stylistically fascinating approaches to ceramic design.
Vase 1 (left) – VEB Strehla (East German Pottery)
The smaller vase comes from the production of VEB Strehla Keramik, one of the most renowned ceramic companies in the former GDR. This particular series from Strehla garnered international attention and is now sought after by collectors.
This piece is truly special. Its unique feature is its rectangular shape with a side opening arranged in two squares, one above the other. Also noteworthy is the relief decoration with geometric elements, deeply etched into the surface. It features a beautifully crafted, smooth gradient glaze with a subtle shimmer. This model was predominantly produced in brown-red glazes. The brown-orange color combination shown here, however, is considerably rarer and therefore highly valued by collectors.
This vase is thus a unique design piece from the East German Pottery era with corresponding collector value.
Vase height: 18 cm
Vase 2 (right) – Scheurich “Kosmos” (West German Pottery)
The second vase comes from the manufacturer Scheurich Keramik, one of the most important producers of West German Pottery.
It is the well-known “Kosmos” model, whose style is strongly influenced by the Sputnik era and the fascination with space travel and cosmic forms at that time. The decoration does not feature flowers, but rather star-like motifs distributed across the surface of the vase.
The series was produced in several sizes and color variations. Examples in blue, red, or white are particularly common. The orange glaze shown here, however, was produced in a comparatively small number.
Height: 20 cm
Condition: Both vases are in exceptionally good condition. They are clearly display pieces that have been preserved for decades. The ceramics show no signs of use. The glazes are undamaged inside as well as out. Furthermore, both vases are completely watertight and can easily be used as flower vases. This is by no means a given, especially for ceramic vases from this period.
An unusual collector's duo: This ensemble combines two ceramic traditions that developed in parallel during the division of Germany – East German studio pottery and West German industrial pottery. It is precisely this East-West contrast that makes the duo so appealing. A rare set for collectors of East German pottery, West German pottery, or for lovers of ceramic design from the 1960s and 1970s.
