Pearl mollusk (the Pinctada Maxima). Pearl has been used in decoration since prehistoric times as a result of catching mollusks for food. In modern times it was used artistically in inlays, game chips, devotional artifacts, as a bead for the cultured pearl industry as well as in buttons. As buttons, it was quite popular before plastic came into play. Mother-of-pearl is the smooth pearly coating on the inside of some mollusks and Pinctada maxima, the Australian pearl oyster in the South Seas (also known as pearl button oyster and pearl oyster) has been a fairly important source, not only for the quality of the mother-of-pearl, but also because the wild shells are notoriously large, averaging 20 to 30 cm to in exceptional cases 40 cm.
