The Dalarna horse is the symbol of Dalarna, and nowadays also of Sweden. The one and only world-famous wooden horses are made in Nusnäs, near Mora, by the Olsson family. The Dalarna horse has been made for over 350 years and sold worldwide.
In the past, various children's toys were carved from wood during the long winter evenings as a cottage industry. This is how the Dalarna horses came into being, in all shapes and sizes and colors.
The symbol became popular because, during the 1939 World's Fair in New York, there was a desire for an eye-catching piece for the entrance to the Swedish pavilion. This resulted in a very large, wooden horse, 2.80 meters tall. It received such an enthusiastic response that small replicas of this horse were produced on a large scale. Many variations of these horses are still made today.
The horse is still largely hand-carved and entirely hand-painted. As a result, no two horses are alike. You can follow the production process during a visit to Nils Olsson's company.
