70s Handmade Mexican Alebrije Sculpture Ayeta Ramirez Oaxaca
This endearing, colorful little Mexican monster was created in the 70s. The fantasy beast, also known as an Alebrije, was handcrafted by artist Ayeta Ramirez in Oaxaca.
The special figurine is made of copal wood. This wood is found only in Central and South America and is known as the only type of wood used for the unique Mexican Alebrijes. The wood is moistened, after which the details are very precisely carved into the wood using machetes and knives. After carving the fantasy beasts, Alebrijes must ‘dry out’ for months. Only after the wood has completely dried can the paint be applied. Because this sculpture was made in the 70s, it still features the original aniline paint. Paint that consists entirely of natural ingredients.
The sculpture is signed under the leg by Ayeta Ramirez and was made in San Martin Tilcajete in Oaxaca. This has traditionally been the most famous place where Alebrijes were made, and this is where these fantasy creatures originated.
A few connecting rods on the statue are worn down, and repairs have been made to one of the teeth and the left ear. However, certainly considering its age, the statue is still in excellent vintage condition!
