MAARTJE WIJNGAARDEN, born 1946 in 't Zand (a village in the municipality of Schagen, North Holland), painter and screen printer.
Maartje Wijngaarden is a late bloomer in art. Only after the age of 35 did she develop into a professional visual artist. Initially she painted fairly traditional landscapes and still lifes in neo-impressionist style.
Gradually she developed her own handwriting with the main theme being her view of nature and how she is concerned with humans and animals. Her recent works almost always depict animals. Sometimes she also paints scenes about the relationship between humans and animals. Her forms are always abstracted and often have heavy contours. Most striking is the bold and often bright use of color.
