The Knoll Studio Barcelona Chair is an iconic design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1929, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was asked to design the German Pavilion for the World's Fair in Barcelona. He created a rhythmic whole in which the Barcelona Chair, then called the MR90, took center stage. The distinctive cross frame is based on curule chairs from ancient Rome and is combined with contemporary materials. For instance, the elegant frame is formed from chrome, which has been hand-polished to a mirror-like finish. The backrest and seat are interwoven with straps of cowhide, dyed in the same color as the seat cushions. These foam cushions are upholstered in top-quality leather. All 40 panels are hand-hemmed and fitted with buttons, all made from a single piece of leather. Although the chair was initially produced in Germany, Mies gifted the production rights to his close friend Florence Knoll in 1948. You will find Mies van der Rohe's signature and the KnollStudio logo on the frame. The only thing that has changed since the first version is the comfort, which has been significantly improved by means of extra padding.
The Barcelona Chair is 75 centimeters wide, 77 centimeters high, and 77 centimeters deep. The seat height is 43 centimeters.
