France / 1980 / Painting / S. Gil / Wood / Mid-century / Vintage
Painting on a wooden panel of the famous French musician Jacques Offenbach. Signed on the back of the panel: S. Gil and Paris.
This cartoonesque artwork beautifully captures the essence of a passionate musician lost in the rhythm of his craft, showcasing intricate details that bring the scene to life.
Serge Gil explored many different ways and techniques and finally stuck with acrylic and watercolor. His focus is on the human figure and especially portraits of artists that inspired him (rock artists, jazz musicians, actors, etc.). Gil finds inspiration in comics, posters, street art, and tattoos.
Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880) was a German-born French composer, cellist, and impresario. He is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s to the 1870s, and his uncompleted opera The Tales of Hoffman. He was a powerful influence on later composers of the operetta genre. His best-known works were continually revived during the 20th century, and many of his operettas continue to be staged in the 21st. The Tales of Hoffmann remains part of the standard opera repertory.
