The Vitra Organic Chair was designed by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. The design of this comfortable reading chair dates back to 1940, when Eames and Saarinen submitted several variations of the Organic Chair to a design competition organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Although the competition focused on organic design, the rounded shapes of the Organic Conference Dining Chair were very ahead of their time. In 1940, mass production of this chair was not yet possible. It wasn't until 1950 that organically shaped seat shells, like those of the Eames Plastic Chair and the Organic Chair, were mass-produced. The chair's interior consists of a laminated seat covered with a layer of polyurethane foam. The chair is upholstered in a sheepskin-like fabric, creating a playful effect true to Eames's philosophy. The chair measures 73 centimeters wide, 83 centimeters high, and 68 centimeters deep. The seat height is 36 centimeters.
