This is a set of two antique French faience candlesticks, manufactured around 1900 in the Rouen or Desvres region. The objects are distinguished by their expressive design, with one candlestick taking the form of a dragon and the other that of a salamander, both characteristic of the rich tradition of French earthenware from that period.
The candlesticks are made of ceramic and feature polychrome painting on a white background. The decoration consists of detailed floral motifs and graceful swirls in the colors blue, orange, green, and yellow. On the underside, the objects are marked 'Mont Saint-Michel', indicating their origin or purpose as souvenirs from that era. The dimensions and the specific glazing technique reflect the craftsmanship of the early twentieth century.
The set is in good condition commensurate with its age and use. The ceramic has retained an authentic character over the years, with the original painting remaining bright and vibrant. These decorative objects make a striking addition to a classic or eclectic interior. They look particularly good on a mantelpiece, a sideboard, or as part of a collection of antique European earthenware.
Both objects are hand-signed on the underside with "Mont. Saint. Michel". The standing dragon bears model number 1420 and the reclining chimera bears model number 1422, including the hand-drawn initials B.S. of the master painter. They were manufactured around 1900 in France (Desvres region) as luxury, artisanal souvenirs for the world-famous Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel.
