Brian Duffy — David Bowie, Aladdin Sane (Closed Eyes), 1973
One of the most iconic portraits in pop history. Brian Duffy photographed David Bowie in 1973 during the session that would define the face of a generation — the lightning bolt, the closed eyes, the otherworldly calm. This image became the cover of Aladdin Sane and has remained an integral part of twentieth-century visual culture ever since.
Duffy was no ordinary fashion photographer. Together with David Bailey and Terence Donovan, he formed the so-called Black Trinity — the three names that dominated British photography in the sixties and seventies. His collaboration with Bowie resulted in images that placed art and pop music on equal footing.
