Monumental 16th-century (circa 1560) 'Stollentruhe', a German chest made for a patrician as an object of prestige. Gothic in tradition.
Heavy oak, fitted by a blacksmith with wrought iron bands that strengthened this piece of furniture. It's common for Germans to make their furniture extremely heavy and strong; it stems from their national character.
