Magnificent set of 10 plates with box decorated with Japanese urushi lacquer, belonging to the Showa Period, 20th century. The gilded designs are made using the maki-e technique, showing delicate plant motifs of reeds on the plates, while the lid of the box is decorated with a bird perched on a flowering branch, both recurring symbols in Japanese aesthetics. These designs are made in an elegant golden tone on the reddish lacquer, the result of the maki-e technique that consists of sprinkling gold powder on fresh lacquer placed in the shape of the desired design. Small impact visible on the lid of the box. More about urushi-e Urushi-e, known in the West as Japanese urushi lacquer, actually originated far from Japan. It has its origins, like many other Japanese artistic techniques, in the ancient Chinese empire. The birth of this practice dates back to the 7th century A.D. Its plasticity and spectacular finishes caused a furor and its use spread rapidly throughout Asia. When Europeans discovered it, they fell prey to the Asian influence and the Orientalist current swept through the most influential courts. After decades of disuse and being relegated to the showcases of decorative arts museums, this ancestral technique is back with renewed strength. In addition, the lacquering process is very meticulous, slow and complex, which makes them truly valuable objects. The Showa Period, corresponding to the reign of Emperor Shōwa (1926-1989) was the longest reign of all Japanese emperors. During this period, World War II was a major turning point in Japanese culture and arts. The Showa era was decisive in the cultural aspect, consolidating the Westernizing process that had begun in the Meiji and Taisho eras. Western influence was strong in aesthetics, architecture, gastronomy, literature and other cultural expressions that emerged over the years.
