Yawamalya Thareenak from Bangkok, Thailand, is one of the few professional female painters in the Thai art scene, which is still very male-dominated. She has been painting since her early youth. Initially, portraits were the focus of her artistic interest, with which she impressed those around her, so much so that she was able to sell her work while still at school. She had her first solo exhibition of her work in 1967. In addition to painting, she devoted herself to printmaking, especially monotype. After graduating from the Poh Chang Art & Crafts School in Bangkok, she worked as a teacher at the innovative Secondary Demonstration School. When she then became director of another institution, she had to stop painting for two years. Afterward, however, she began a new career with numerous participations in regional art exhibitions.
