A sculptural bisque porcelain vase designed by Martin Freyer, one of the leading artists of Rosenthal’s Studio-Line in the 1960s and 70s. Freyer was celebrated for his highly tactile, abstract reliefs — oscillating between Op-Art, geology, and graphic wave structures. This tall cylindrical vase features one of his signature radiating and wave-like relief patterns, wrapping around the entire surface in an almost hypnotic motion. The matte white bisque porcelain enhances the play of light and shadow, giving the vase a calm, architectural presence despite the dynamic surface. Although stamped Zweite Wahl (B-Sortierung) — a common designation for pieces with minimal or merely formal deviations — this example shows no visible or tangible defects and presents beautifully.
Designer
Martin Freyer (1904–1975) was trained as a painter and sculptor and became one of Rosenthal’s most influential mid-century designers. His work merges sculptural abstraction with functional forms, and he is best known for bold, deeply modelled relief vases that have become highly collectible in the international post-war design market.
Manufacturer
Rosenthal Studio-Line represented the avant-garde wing of Rosenthal, founded to bring contemporary artistic thinking into serial porcelain production. Collaborations with designers, architects and artists turned Studio-Line into one of the key creative laboratories of European design in the post-war era.
Design
This vase belongs to Freyer’s series of Op-Art inspired relief cylinders, characterised by concentric motion, wave structures, and finely modelled texture reminiscent of geological formations. The minimal cylindrical silhouette acts as a quiet frame for the complex, sculptural surface.
