A white sun barely penetrates the mist. The snow has erased the paths, muted the colors, and left behind that particular silence of winter landscapes. In the foreground, an old fence appears beneath the snow before disappearing into the landscape. Further on, trees stand tall in an almost surreal light. Their bare branches blend with shades of mauve, gray, pale yellow, and blue, while a few russet leaves still cling to the twigs. Diane Clapp Bartz belongs to that generation of American watercolorists who made landscape less an exact representation of nature and more an exploration of light and atmosphere. In her work, water and pigments seem to decide for themselves a part of the landscape. Colors meet, spread, and dissolve into one another. A tree can emerge from a shadow, a line can get lost in the mist, a patch of color can become a leaf. Here, Bartz builds the entire scene around just a few elements: the snow, the trees, the fence, and the light. The large, almost white solar disk immediately draws the eye, before it gradually discovers the small russet touches scattered among the branches. This vintage reproduction of an watercolor by the artist belongs to the decorative world of the 1980s-1990s, a period during which Diane Clapp Bartz widely disseminated her landscape work through various editions of her pieces. Its framing is also perfectly representative of this era: a deep frame in burgundy tones, a wide dark mat, and a discreet gold fillet that brightens the image without distracting from the landscape.
