White Center (Yellow, Pink, and Lavender on Rose) is an abstract painting by Mark Rothko, created in 1950.
White Center exemplifies Rothko's characteristic multifaceted style: several blocks of complementary colors layered on a large canvas.
The composition is vertical: a horizontal yellow rectangle at the top, a horizontal black band, a rectangular white band, and the lower half in lavender. The upper portion of the pink background is darker than the lower portion.
White Center expresses the eloquence of the unspoken; if words were needed to describe its visual music, they would undoubtedly be the memorable lines of Walt Whitman's "Sunset on the Prairie."
