Stella is considered one of the fathers of Minimalist art. Around 1960, early in his career, Frank Stella departed from his peers in contemporary art, whose abstractions were linked to physical objects or emotions. His famous quote "What you see is what you see" marked a turning point between the then declining Abstract Expressionism and the emerging Minimalism.
