Large brass lamp from the whaling era around 1850/1860. Whale oil was used in the 19th century by many inhabitants of the seashores, but also on sailing ships, as a cheap fuel for lighting. Originally designed as a wall lamp, this specimen was converted into a floor lamp for the table. For this purpose, the base was modified/opened, i.e. re-soldered and weighted down with sand to increase stability.
