Wang Gang's photograph, from his "Interior Portraits" series, features two figures standing in a darkened room. Soft light illuminates their faces, creating a striking contrast with the dark background. The walls have a rough texture, adding a tactile dimension to the image. The figures, dressed simply and casually, cross their arms and seem lost in thought, adding emotional depth to the scene.
In the center, a pile of wooden tools lies on the ground, perhaps underlining an aspect of the daily life of the Yi and Tibetan communities that Wang Gang seeks to capture. The intimate, authentic atmosphere invites reflection on the culture and identity of these minorities.
This unique work, exhibited at the Europalia China Exhibition in Brussels, testifies to Wang Gang's technical mastery and artistic sensitivity, offering a rare and precious glimpse into often little-known cultures.
*Wang Gang (b. 1969, Guangzhou, China) - Photographer** (in French)
Wang Gang is a leading figure in contemporary Chinese photography. Born in 1969 in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, he developed an early passion for intellectual and artistic exploration. After leaving the South China University of Technology, he devoted himself to the self-taught study of French history and existentialism, under the guidance of a Hong Kong university professor. This open-mindedness and deep-seated curiosity nourish his singular view of the world.
In 2006, he began his career as a professional photographer with the black and white series "Yi in the Wild", dedicated to the Yi minority. His work quickly won international acclaim: in 2007, he was awarded the prestigious World Press Photo in Amsterdam in the Portrait category. The same year, he began the "Interior Portraits" series in color, documenting the daily lives of the Yi and Tibetan people, subjects that remain at the heart of his approach.
Since 2008, Wang Gang has also been exploring the panoramic black and white format, continuing his immersion in the Yi and Tibetan communities. His work is characterized by a human, respectful approach and great technical mastery, combining aesthetics and documentary depth.
