Product description
There is a timeless grace in certain children's portraits. This charming vintage wall plaque features one of the most endearing portraits of 18th-century English childhood: Miss Jane Bowles, painted with her small dog by Sir Joshua Reynolds around . Jane was then only three or four years old. Seated in her light-colored dress, she hugs her little black and white spaniel with that very spontaneous tenderness characteristic of childhood. There is nothing solemn in this scene: Reynolds here abandons the majestic poses of the British aristocracy to capture an almost intimate moment, that of a little girl and her companion. The story surrounding the painting further adds to the image's charm. Jane's father, Oldfield Bowles, reportedly hesitated to entrust his daughter's portrait to Reynolds. The painter, even before beginning his work, is said to have taken care to gain the child's trust by playing with her. This complicity is reflected in Jane's particularly natural expression, whose gaze still seems to address the viewer directly today. The original work by Sir Joshua Reynolds ( ), one of the greatest British portrait painters of the 18th century and first president of the Royal Academy, is now preserved in the Wallace Collection in London. The portrait also gained posterity through engraving and was notably disseminated at the end of the 18th century under the title 'Juvenile Amusement'. It is also known by the evocative name 'Love me, love my Dog'. Made in the second half of the 20th century, our plaque reflects the taste of that era for large old paintings reproduced as decorative objects for interiors. The image is applied onto a thick compressed wood backing, intentionally cut with an irregular and rustic contour, then covered with a glossy enameled finish that gives it depth and luminosity. The visible brown perimeter naturally forms its frame. On the reverse side, the raw material of the panel is fully visible, and a metal hanger allows the plaque to be hung directly on the wall. Dimensions: approximately 25 × 20 cm. Very good general condition. There is simply a slight blemish on the lower part of the image, visible in the photographs, which does not affect the overall charm. Additional details: - Brand: 20eSiecle - Material: bois compressé - Material: émaillée - Colour: brun - Period: seconde moitié du XXe siècle
