A tilted face, clasped hands, a few folds of veil and almost no other embellishment: Ruffony manages here to give metal an astonishing softness. The Virgin appears in profile in a large medallion signed RUFFONY, a work by Oscar Ruffoni, known as Ruffony ( ). A sculptor and medallist active at the turn of the 20th century, the artist developed a highly recognizable style, informed by this period when the medallion became a true medium of expression for sculptors. Portraits, allegorical figures, and religious subjects allowed him to work on what he mastered particularly well: profile, drapery, and relief. This Virgin is a beautiful illustration of that. The face is deliberately serene, almost absorbed in prayer. Around it, Ruffony lets the veil take on more movement; its folds fall freely and give the medallion its full depth. The halo, rendered with great simplicity, further focuses the gaze on the profile. The medallion is not presented alone. It is set on a brown wooden panel with magnificent grain, cut into a fluid silhouette and accented with two thin brass strips. Lower down, the small holy water basin retains its relief botanical decoration. Wood, patinated metal, and gilded touches compose a particularly harmonious ensemble. This holy water stoup also allows us a glimpse into the intimacy of early 20th-century homes. These objects accompanied family life, far removed from church rituals: they were found in a bedroom, near a bed or a door, often kept and passed down from one generation to the next. Today, it can obviously be seen as an object of devotion, but also as a small, signed wall art piece, where the work of an identified sculptor meets a very beautiful antique domestic object. At approximately 20 cm in height, it stands beautifully on its own on a wall, among old frames, in a bedroom, or amidst a collection of religious art.
