Original Vitsœ extendable dining table, model 720, designer Dieter Rams, design year 1972 SEVENTIES.
A strong example of functional modernism: sleek, understated, and built around usability.
This piece has an oval shape in the closed position (not a perfectly round table) and extends into a longer table shape with a slightly raised outer edge and a tapered top.
Dimensions approx.
– retracted: 120 × 110 cm
– extended: 190 × 110 cm
– height: 70-74 cm with swivel feet for raising if desired
Condition:
– good used condition with normal signs of wear
– small chips along the edges where the leaves meet
– additionally, one more noticeable chip/damage on the edge (see detail photo)
- minor paint damage on 1 leg
fairly easy to repair if desired, but not disruptive in daily use and consistent with its age. The table does not follow trends; it carries light, dampens chaos, and lets other objects speak for themselves.

Dieter Rams worked with both his modular shelving 606 system and this table according to the GOOD DESIGN principle:
-unobtrusive – the furniture does not dominate the space
-long-lasting – the system is still loved
-as little design as possible – maximum functionality with minimal form. The 720 table is therefore a typical example of German modernism from the 1960s, which later had a huge influence on companies like Apple and left a lasting mark on design history.
The designer is one of the most influential designers of the 20th century – this table shows exactly why.
