There is in this small image something that transcends a simple religious object, a gesture of tenderness frozen in time. The Virgin gently inclines her face towards that of the Child. Their two heads almost touch, encircled by their halos, while Mary's cloak descends in wide folds and seems to envelop the Child in a single protective movement. The composition here abandons any sense of monumentality. Mary is not depicted as a sovereign, but as a mother. The sculptor favored the gentleness of expressions, the closeness of the faces, and that impression of calm that characterizes a part of 20th-century Italian domestic religious imagery. The ivory-toned bas-relief is made from a molded composite material, a resin or synthetic material designed to recapture the warm appearance of ivory. The slightly patinated recesses accentuate the features of the faces and the folds of the garment. The small sculpture is showcased against a deep green velvet background, whose color contrasts beautifully with its cream tone. A gilded frame with successive moldings completes the piece and today restores all its decorative charm. This presentation is characteristic of those small devotional images which, particularly in Italy in the mid-20th century, naturally found their place in the intimacy of homes: in a bedroom, near a crucifix, on a small wall dedicated to family or religious mementos. Time has left some marks on the frame and its gilding, visible in the photographs. They naturally accompany the age of the piece without detracting from its presence.
