Rare desk designed by Belgian designer Jules Wabbes (1919–1974) and manufactured by Le Mobilier Universel in the 1960s. Wabbes was known for his timeless, functional designs and the refined use of wood and metal.
This piece features a rectangular laminated rosewood top supported by a chrome-plated steel frame. The two drawer units are crafted from light wood and feature the original, characteristic Wabbes handles. The design reflects the minimalist, industrial aesthetic of mid-century modernism.
The desk shows minor signs of wear, including a few circles on the top. These can easily be repaired by lightly sanding and re-oiling. The drawers function well, but the locks don't work. The keys are missing. One side of the drawers opens, the other doesn't. This is easily resolved by removing the lock; the drawers would then no longer lock, but the lock would remain visible. This is easily adjusted or replaced by someone with some manual dexterity. The casters run smoothly.
The furniture is in sturdy, good condition and only requires some maintenance. The price has been adjusted accordingly.
