This vintage hand-painted child-sized chair is a beautiful example of Alpine folk furniture, likely inspired by Tyrolean or Bavarian Brettstuhl designs, and sourced in Portugal where similar styles were often adapted in rural areas.
It features a tall backrest with carved rosette and scallop motifs (symbols of protection), and original hand-painted floral stencils in deep red and ochre. The reverse is flat-painted in yellow, typical of pieces placed against walls.
Crafted in solid wood with simple, durable joinery, this chair dates from the late 19th to early 20th century and was likely used as a children’s seat or decorative prayer chair.
Finished with a light wax polish to preserve its aged patina.
A collector’s piece of Alpine folk heritage; storytelling in wood and paint.
Paint has aged with a lovely patina. Crack in the chair seat.
