Designed in 1955-56 as part of his Pedestal Collection for Knoll, Eero Saarinen's Tulip Armchair is a modernist icon. Saarinen tried to solve the problem of "the rot of legs" in traditional furniture by creating a chair with a single pedestal, giving it a clean and sculptural appearance. Although he originally envisioned the chair to be made entirely of one material, technological constraints led to the use of a seat made of fiberglass and an aluminum base, painted to appear as one.
Resembling both a flower and a wine glass, the design became revolutionary for its organic form and simplicity. Its futuristic aesthetic, often associated with the space age, made it a staple of mid-century modern design.
New cushions in chartreuse yellow/green upholstery have covers with zippers and are attached to the seats with a few pieces of Velcro at the bottom.
Note: These are early production fixed base versions and not the later production swivel bases.
Fully restored. The bases have been resprayed and the shells have been cleaned. The cushions are new.
