Beautiful vintage Thai Singha lion / Foo dog without label but attributed to Maison Jansen, France, 1960s.
Both the statue and the hood are in good condition. Bronze / brass statue with a beautiful aged patina.
A Foo Dog, also known as a Fu Dog or Guardian Lion, is a traditional Southeast Asian architectural ornament and a symbol of protection. Despite the name, Foo Dogs are not dogs, but stylized representations of lions. They are often placed in pairs at the entrances of palaces, temples, houses, and other important buildings in Chinese and East Asian culture. These statues originate in Buddhism and are believed to ward off evil spirits.
The word "Singha" is derived from the Sanskrit "Simha," which means lion. In Buddhism, the lion is associated with the Buddha's "lion roar," which refers to the powerful and persuasive teachings of his doctrine.
In Thailand, for example, it is seen as a symbol of the royal house.
