Beautiful vintage Surinamese Palaver Chair. It is very unique, as other chairs usually depict African animals. The chair consists of two parts that are nested together.
The top of the chair depicts the Surinamese coat of arms and is flanked by two indigenous people representing the original inhabitants. Below, a pennant with the motto justitia, pietas, fides (justice, piety, trust) is displayed.
The coat of arms consists of an oval divided shield with a sailing ship at sea on the left half and a royal palm on the earth on the right half. In the center is a diamond with a five-pointed star within it. The sailing ship symbolizes the past, the palm the future, and the star prosperity.
The star points represent the five continents from which the inhabitants of Suriname originated: Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
Below the coat of arms is the ala kondre necklace. This necklace, with its many beads, reflects the diversity of the Surinamese people. The legs of the chair represent teeth, which stand for protection and positivity.
